Thank you so much for the new category! I wanted to post in this spot because after a great deal of pain and nausea with absolutely zero successes in treating my SOD Type II, we have decided to take a different approach. I have always been allergic to petroleum products (ie nylons, ointments and a whole host of products you wouldn't even believe that have it). This also means plastics, which are involved in almost all food products one can buy. We got to thinking that some of this could be related to that. My Mom teaches a kid who was diagnosed with IBS but none of the treatments for the condition helped. They finally took him to an allergist who discovered that he was allergic to about 95% of everything they test for but for some reason he didn't respond to the histamine like the average person, ie hay fever. Instead, it got into his gut and caused terrible cramping, spasm and sickness. Multiple research periodicals have show that those of us who suffer from SOD tend to have a much higher sensitivity to outside influences then those without and maybe, just maybe, that is why, even in part, we suffer from this disorder. We are going to cut out the plastics from my life as best we can to see if it helps. No drug has, in fact every one I have tried has made me very sick. I thought maybe some others here might like to try it too, although it won't be easy. It has to be better than enduring all those barbaric procedure and living on massive pain killers, SSRIs, SNRIs and such!

Also, we are planing on removing hormone treated meats. Other research has shown that the SO is affected greatly by hormones and it is possible that those extra non healthy additions keep the SO from performing as it should. It's worth a try,

I'm Type II as well. I also had the sphincterotomy on the bile duct. I can't say I feel that procedure did much for me as I did start having pains post procedure.

But, right now, I'm somewhat gluten free, low fat and taking 25mg nortriptyline/day and I'm doing pretty good. Not nauseous, and 95% the time, pain free. I was tested for celiac disease and did not show that, but my GI doc said that not all gluten sensitivities show up on the tests. I'm going to test this theory in the next week or so by having gluten again. For right now, I can say low fat, no gluten and nortriptyline is working for me in controlling my SOD.

      Kris,
Just wondering if the theory of eating gluten again caused you any pain.

I too have had the phincterotomy on the bile duct, in June of 2010. I have been having some pain but was dismissing it until 2 days before Thanksgiving, where I had my first attack, I have had 3 in the 6 weeks. All test show it's not the gall bladder..
I didn't know this SOD was something that could come back. I really was not informed about what I had.
After finding this site, it has brought more light to issue. I have/had Type III...
      Any help would be great!

I was having so many issues these past few years, and doctors were treating me for everything from heartburn to GERD and IBS. I was finally diagnosed with SOD, but have not found anything to help in the treatment so far. I am looking for any and every advice from people! Now that I know what is going on, I am able to eat in a different fashion, but it is still an every day battle.
